A gentle guide
How to start a prayer journal
You do not need beautiful handwriting, the right notebook, or a theology degree. You need a few quiet minutes and a willingness to be honest with God. Here is a simple way to begin.
Step 1
Choose a time you can actually keep
A prayer journal grows through small, faithful moments, not grand plans. Pick a time that already exists in your day: with your morning coffee, on your lunch break, or before bed. Five honest minutes every day will carry you further than an hour once a month.
Step 2
Begin smaller than you think
Your first entry can be a single sentence. Write one thing you are grateful for, one person on your heart, or one question you are carrying. The habit matters more than the length. You can always write more on the days the words come easily.
Step 3
Write to God, not for an audience
A prayer journal is a conversation, not a performance. Bring the real thing: the worry you keep circling, the joy you almost missed, the prayer you have prayed a hundred times. Honesty is the whole point. Nobody else needs to read a word of it.
Step 4
Let Scripture shape your prayers
When you do not know what to say, start with a verse. Read a Psalm, a line from the Gospels, or the passage from Sunday's sermon, and write your response to it. Scripture gives your prayers language when your own words run out.
Step 5
Return to what you wrote
The quiet gift of a prayer journal is looking back. Revisit old entries on a slow Sunday. Mark the prayers that have been answered. Notice the themes that keep surfacing. Over time, your journal becomes a record of God's faithfulness in your everyday life.
A place to keep every prayer
The Caffeinated Bible gives your prayers a home alongside your journal entries, dreams, and sermon notes. Record what you are praying for, return to it over time, and mark the prayers you have seen answered.
